Reading: We will read "If You Made a Million." This story goes along with our Social Studies unit on the economy. Students will also be taking the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) Test this week. Based on the results of this, the student's test scores in reading on the Standford 10 test that all students took last spring, and teacher recommendation, students will be placed into reading groups which will start the week of August 23rd. Students in third grade who are placed in the accelerated reading program will have reading with me. All other students will be divided equally between Mrs. Chambers' and Mrs. Slaughter's classes for reading.
Cursive Handwriting: We will be reviewing all the letters of the alphabet. Students will have a practice sheet for each day of the week the first nine weeks of school.
Language: We will be learning about complete sentences and the types of sentences.
Writing: We are working on making our ideas clear as well as writing paragraphs with a topic sentence, three or more detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. We will review indenting paragraphs and making sure all sentences are complete thoughts.
Timed Tests: Timed tests are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 addition problems in 4 minutes. This week's test will be just be practice. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night.
Math: We are learning the material in Chapter 1. We will cover lessons 1-2 through 1-6. All students have access to the math book online. A sheet will come home this week on how to access this wonderful resource. This online account has many other resources which will help your child be successful with our math program this year.
Social Studies: We will learn about our classroom economy this week. We will discuss the class store, the banker, the cashier, and the classroom economist.
Bible: This year students will have to write the Bible verse each Friday. This week's verse is John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This test is next Friday.
